What’s on Offer?
The CODESRIA Summer School, generously supported by the Oumou Dilly Foundation (Switzerland), aims to strengthen interdisciplinary research on Africa. It fosters collaboration between the CODESRIA community and scholars from the African Studies community in Switzerland, enhancing knowledge exchange and academic discourse.
Objectives:
- Stimulate and consolidate interdisciplinary approaches to research on Africa and other regions from within the African continent.
- Explore African Studies as a model of area studies and its contribution to global scholarship.
- Investigate the intellectual challenge of Africa as an ‘object’ of knowledge and its implications for broader academic inquiry.
Cost Coverage:
- Travel, accommodation, and meals during the Summer School will be provided for participants from African institutions.
- Limited slots are available for self-funded participants willing to cover their own costs.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Open to PhD students and early career scholars from Higher Education institutions in Africa. Priority given to those in their first or second year of PhD enrollment.
- Applicants from disciplines including Social Anthropology, Sociology, History, Religion, Philosophy, Gender studies, and Political science are encouraged.
- PhD students registered at Swiss universities are also eligible to apply.

- Motivation or Application letter addressing the challenge of “biectivity” in the social sciences and humanities, particularly in Africa.
- Concept paper (5-pages) outlining your current work, its relevance to the Summer School’s theme, and your expectations.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae.
- One letter of recommendation from your institution or PhD supervisor (for early career scholars).
- Passport copy.
- Proof of PhD registration (for PhD students) or doctoral certificate (for early career scholars).
