The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) exclusively offers scholarships to well-qualified citizens of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) developing member countries. participating academic institutions.

Field(s) of study:

The ADB-JSP covers postgraduate studies in various fields that are essential for development, including economics, management, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, science and technology, and other related areas. These fields are crucial for addressing the diverse challenges faced by developing countries and promoting sustainable development.

Only programs offered at the participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Regions are eligible for ADB-JSP funding.

Number of Scholarships:

About 300 scholarships are awarded annually through the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP). These scholarships provide opportunities for well-qualified individuals from ADB’s developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in fields crucial for development.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The ADB-JSP offers comprehensive financial support, including full tuition fees, a monthly subsistence and housing allowance, an allowance for books and instructional materials, medical insurance, and travel expenses.

The scholarship is initially awarded for one year, with the possibility of an extension to the second year of study, subject to the scholar’s satisfactory performance as determined by the institute. The maximum duration of the scholarship award is two years for both master’s and doctorate programs.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP), applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Citizenship: Be a national of an ADB borrowing member country (applicants from countries that are no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible).
  2. Admission: Have gained admission to an approved MA/PhD course at an academic institution.
  3. Academic Record: Hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a superior academic record.
  4. Work Experience: Have at least two years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after obtaining a university degree) at the time of application.
  5. Language Proficiency: Possess proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to pursue studies.
  6. Age: Not be more than 35 years old at the time of application. In exceptional cases, the age limit may be extended to 45 years for programs suitable for senior officials and managers.
  7. Health: Be in good health.
  8. Commitment: Agree to return to their home country after completing studies under the program.
  9. Exclusions: Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and their relatives are not eligible. Staff of academic institutions are also ineligible.
  10. Residence: Applicants living or working in a country other than their home country are not eligible.
  11. Enrollment: ADB-JSP does not support applicants who are already enrolled in graduate degree programs.

Application instructions:

For the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP), applicants should follow these application instructions:

  1. Contact Academic Institution: Request information and application forms directly from the chosen academic institution where you intend to pursue your MA/PhD studies.
  2. Indicate ADB-JSP Scholarship: Inform the academic institution that you are applying for admission and would like to be considered for the ADB-JSP Scholarship.
  3. Complete Institution Application: Fill out the institution’s application form and provide all required documentation, including the ADB-JSP Information Sheet form, as specified by the academic institution.
  4. Submission: Submit the completed application form and supporting documents to the academic institution.
  5. No Separate Application to ADB: Note that no separate application to ADB is necessary. The academic institution will handle the scholarship application process on behalf of the applicants.
