About the University

In Indianapolis, Indiana, there is a private Roman Catholic university called Marian University. The college, which was established in Oldenburg, Indiana, by the Sisters of St. Francis in 1851, relocated to Indianapolis in 1937. From 1936 until 2009, Marian was known as Marian College before changing its name to Marian University.

The institution inaugurated Indiana’s first medical school in more than a century in 2013, along with the state’s first osteopathic medical school and second functioning medical school at the time. There were 2,431 undergraduate, 1,164 graduate, and 650 doctoral students enrolled as of 2017.

Athletes from Marian University have captured 45 USA Cycling National Championships and 8 NAIA National Championships in sports like football in 2012 and 2015, women’s basketball in 2016 and 2017, 60-meter hurdles and 800 meters in men’s track and field in 2016 and 2017, and women’s basketball in 2016 and 2017. Knightro the Knight is their mascot.

The Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, Indiana, established Marian University in 1851 as a liberal arts college with a teacher preparation program. Before Indiana established its first tax-supported normal school, teachers were trained at Oldenburg for more than ten years under the guidance of Father Francis Joseph Rudolph and Mother Theresa Hackelmeier.

The school, which was once known as St. Francis Normal, changed its name to Marian College after combining with Immaculate Conception Junior College to become a four-year, state-approved institution. As a location for Marian College, the Sisters of St. Francis bought the former James A. Allison mansion “Riverdale” in Indianapolis in November 1936.

Mother M. Clarissa Dillhoff oversaw the institution’s 1937 relocation to Indianapolis after it acquired a state charter and the Riverdale estate in 1936. Marian College shifted its location to Allison Mansion. The structure served as the Sisters’ dormitories, administrative offices, library, and other spaces. On September 15, 1937, classes got underway.

The institution started an expansion project in 1948 that included Marian Hall, Clare Hall, and the Gymnasium. When the brand-new Marian Hall was finished in 1954, the institution became Indiana’s first co-educational Catholic college. The North Central Association granted Marian College its accreditation two years later.

Evans Woollen III, a well-known Indianapolis architect and the founder of Woollen, Molzan, and Partners, created the Modernist-inspired library for the university, which was finished in 1966. The square shape of the library features an open stairway, an exposed structural frame, and stacks placed around reading areas.

In 1976, the college’s teacher education programs were all fully approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
