You are thus encouraged to submit an application for Chatham University Scholarships and Grants for the academic year 2023–2024. Scholarships are given to outstanding new full-time students to reward academic distinction.

Students who demonstrate academic distinction may be eligible for a Chatham Merit Scholarship. Once the student has been accepted to the university, the scholarship’s amount will be calculated. For this scholarship, you don’t need to fill out a separate application.

About the University

Private Chatham University is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was initially established as a women’s college, but in 2015, it welcomed males to its undergraduate programs. There are approximately 2,110 students enrolled there, including 1,002 undergraduates and 1,108 graduate students. In the Schools of Arts, Science & Business, School of Health Sciences, and Falk School of Sustainability & Environment, the university awards certificates, and degrees, including bachelor’s, master’s, first-professional, and doctorate degrees.

Initially located in the Berry home on Woodland Road off Fifth Avenue in the Shadyside district, Chatham was established as the Pennsylvania Female College on December 11, 1869, by Reverend William Trimble Beatty (the father of noted operatic contralto, Louise Homer). 

The current Shadyside Campus is made up of the structures and land of several historic private estates, including those of James Rea, Edward Stanton Fickes, Andrew Mellon, and George M. Laughlin Jr. In 1890, it was renamed the Pennsylvania College for Women, and in 1955, it became Chatham College. The city of Pittsburgh was given its name in honor of William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham. On April 23, 2007, the Pennsylvania Department of Education granted the institution university status; on May 1, 2007, the school formally revealed its new status and changed its name to Chatham University.

Three unique colleges make up the university’s organizational structure: For undergraduate men and women, Chatham College offers academic and extracurricular programs and upholds the customs and traditions of the classic liberal arts college. Teams from Chatham University, also known as the Cougars, compete as NCAA Division III participants. The Presidents’ Athletic Conference includes the Cougars (PAC). Basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball are among the sports played by women. Baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, swimming & diving, track & field, and, starting in the fall of 2019, soccer is among the men’s sports.
