The University of Otago International Master’s Award is designed to offer financial support to international students pursuing Master’s degrees at the University of Otago. Specifically, Research Master’s scholarships aim to assist students during the thesis phase of their research Master’s degree programs.

The University of Otago International Master’s Award includes the following benefits:

  • NZ$17,172 stipend per annum: This is provided as financial support to cover living expenses during the period of study.
  • Tuition fee waiver for 1 year: The scholarship covers tuition fees for one year of Master’s study, capped at the domestic rate. Please note that this excludes the student services fee and insurance.
  • Support for thesis component: The scholarship supports the thesis component of a Master’s research degree for up to 1 year of full-time enrollment.
  • Partial coverage of tuition fees: The scholarship only partially covers the cost of tuition fees, specifically for the thesis component of the Master’s degree. As an international student, you will be charged a higher level of tuition fees compared to New Zealand domestic students. The scholarship covers tuition fees for the thesis component at the domestic fee rate, which is the same cost that a New Zealand student would pay for their fees.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the University of Otago International Master’s Award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Obtaining their first Master’s qualification: Applicants must be pursuing their first Master’s degree.
  • International students: Applicants must be international students.
  • Undertaking a thesis-based Master’s: The scholarship is available for students undertaking a thesis-based Master’s program.

Selection for the scholarship is primarily based on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research. Due to the limited number of scholarships available, applicants are required to have excellent grades to be successful. The University recommends applying only if your grades in the later years of your degree are at A or A+ level.
