The first bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa, Joseph-Bruno Guigues, founded what is now known as the University of Ottawa in 1848 as the College of Bytown. The College of Ottawa was established in 1861 and placed under the control of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Five years later, a royal charter granted it university status.
Pope Leo XIII handed the university a pontifical charter on February 5, 1889, making it a pontifical university. On July 1, 1965, the university underwent a reorganization into a corporation that was apart from any outside entity or religious organization. As a result, the newly established Saint Paul Institution, which was federated with the university, maintained the civil and pontifical charters. The reorganized university kept its surviving civil faculties.
