Lakehead Technical Institute, Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology, and Lakehead University are the descendants of each other. A brief that indicated the need for a higher education facility in northwest Ontario led to the creation of Lakehead Technical Institute. On June 4, 1946, the Province of Ontario formed it by an Order-in-Council. In temporary, rented space in the heart of Port Arthur, classes began in January 1948. The first university-level courses were added to the curriculum that September.

On August 1, 1957, the Ontario Legislature passed an act creating the Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology. After some time had passed, the original Lakehead Institution of Arts, Science, and Technology Act was changed to provide the college the power to create new faculties and award degrees in the humanities and sciences. There are nine faculties at the institution, including those for business administration, education, engineering, management of natural resources, health and behavioral sciences, science and environmental studies, social sciences and humanities, medicine, and graduate studies. The first students at the law school arrived in September 2013.
